Step-by-step plan for planting growing paper

Growing paper, also called flowering paper or seed paper, allows your message to blossom. But the seeds do not bloom by itself. The right circumstances and a little patience is crucial.

Step 1. Moisten your growing paper
First, thoroughly wet the growing paper. And we mean really wet! Only then will the paper dissolve properly whichs allows the seeds te germinate.

Step 2. Place your growing paper on the soil
Place the growing paper inside in a pot or outside on a balcony or in the garden on the earth. Preferably use sowing soil or potting soil for the vegetable garden. The best time to plant outside is from mid-May to October. Indoors in a pot is possible all year round. See below for the best sowing times for the specific seeds in our growing paper.

Step 3. Cover your growing paper with a thin layer of soil
Cover the growing paper with about max 1 cm of soil. This way the seeds get enough nutrients, protection and sun light to germinate. If you cover the paper under a layer of soil that is too thick, the seeds will germinate less quickly or not at all.

Step 4. Water, water and water
Certainly in the beginning we advice to give some water every day, so that the paper remains moist. It is best to use a sprayer with a soft head so that the paper gets the same amount of water everywhere. A watering can or a cup without a nozzle can prevent the paper from getting evenly wet and the seeds from sprouting equally.

Step 5. Sun, warmth and lots of love
In addition, provide a light and warm place. Be careful with a spot in full sun, especially in summer. Then your paper can dry out and the seeds will not germinate. Now you have to be patient! The first plants germinate within a week. Continue to give your plants a lot of love and attention even after germination. You can now give a little less water than in the first week.

Is your growing paper not sprouting?

How sad! Have you followed all the steps a described above? For growing paper to bloom, you need some green fingers and a little luck. Was your pot in full sun light? Was there a heat wave or a heavy thunderstorm? Then it can unfortunately be that your seeds dried out or drowned.

When is the best time to plant growing paper?

Our seed paper is available with different seeds, each of which has its own plant instructions

Bee and butterfly mix
Help the bees and butterflies a little with these wild flowers. It is a mix of Antirrhinum, Godetia, Gypsophyla, Dorotheanthus, Virginian stocks, Poppys, Alyssum and Dianthus baby doll. The best time to sow in the garden is between March and May. Sow indoors from April, after which they have to go outside in mid-May. The bees and butterflies are having a hard time all around the world due to biodiverity loss. More and more wild flowers are disappearing while bees are extremely important for pollinating and fertilizing flowers and plants, like our fruit trees and vegetable plants!

Poppies
Poppies are best sown in the garden between April and May. You can sow indoors from the end of March, after which they have to go outside in mid-May. The seeds need a lot of sunlight to germinate so cover the paper with max 1 cm of soil. It may take a while before you see the first plants, so be patient. This typical bright red flower usually blooms in May and June and is often seen in the fields or along the road. Did you know that the little black seeds from this plant can be found in bread and in those tasty lemon poppy muffins?

Forget-me-nots
Forget-me-nots are best sown in the garden between June and September. Sow indoors from April, after which they have to go outside in mid-May. Forget-me-nots might not bloom the first year. The blue flowers will usually appear the second year from April to September. Did you know the flowers are edible? Beautiful as a garnish for a special and festive dish and this small flower has a neutral taste. The forget-me-not flower has always been a symbol of simplicity, love and loyalty. How beautiful is this seed for birth announcements and funeral cards. Or ideal for a green and sustainable wedding, from save-the-date to invitations, seating arrangement cards, menu's and thank you notes.

Tomato Basil
Tomatoes sprout and grow quickly. The best time to sow outdoors is from mid-May to July in a pot. Then plant the plants in the garden. Sow indoors in a pot from January as long as they get enough light on the windowsill. Did you know that the tomato is not actually vegetables but fruit? And that the tomato originally comes from South America? Tomatoes are also very healthy because they are packed with vitamins and minerals.

Lettuce
The lettuce mix is ideally sown between mid-March and the end of July. From mid-March, the lettuce can be grown indoors or sown directly in the garden from May to August. Lettuce is a light germinator and should therefore only be lightly covered with soil. Then moisten the seeds with a spray bottle. In a bright place where it is not too warm - at best between 10 and 16 °C - the lettuce should now germinate within 10 to 14 days. Once they have sprouted, you can then prick out the little plants into individual pots. Our seed mix contains different types of lettuce so that you get a varied result. What could be better than getting a salad fresh from your own garden onto your plate!

Pacelia
Phacelia is a real bee friend! Give enough water and the beautiful purple flower will produce lots of nectar. Bee’s use the nectar to make honey and the pollen are used to feed the larvae. Butterflies and bumblebees also feast on the nectar.

  • Saw: outside between March and mid August.
  • Place: Sunny
  • Soil: slightly nutrient-rich soil, moderately moist but preferably not very dry.
  • Blooms between May and September
  • Annual plant
  • Grows quick

Herb mix
A Mediterranean herb garden with oregano, thyme and basil. Perfect for a self-made pizza!

  • Sow: indoors in early spring. Plant outdoors after mid-May.
  • Place: Sunny
  • Soil: nutrient-rich soil, moderately moist and well drained.
